Zenzeleni Solar Hub

While living in a rural village on the Wild Coast, I partnered with Zenzeleni Rural Networks to help establish the area’s first solar-powered computer centre — giving children between the ages of 7 and 18 access to computers for the first time.Alongside the development of the space, I designed and painted a large-scale mural for the building. Before creating the final artwork, I held art workshops with the children to understand how they see their world — what matters to them, what feels familiar, and what they imagine for the future.The final mural combines imagery from their everyday lives — cattle, landscape, homes, community — with symbols of technology and possibility. The aim was not to suggest that the future lies elsewhere, but to reflect that opportunity can grow from within their own environment.The project became a collaboration: part community initiative, part visual storytelling — rooted in listening, participation, and shared authorship.
